At the top of the rise look to your right, below you is the river and beyond is the demolished Kirkstall Forge. Iron products had been produced on this site since the Romans made their nails here. The Monks from Kirkstall Abbey used the ample local supply of fuel and raw materials until the dissolution. Originally water powered it was among the first places in history to used steam. The Forge was in use for over 400 years until the Millennium. Now the old buildings have been removed, it was to become a new village, housing and offices. But the recession has put that development on hold.
