The canal is very narrow here as, until the 1970s, there was a lift bridge over the canal. It was removed when the built the flyover, seen in the previous photo. I think one of the houses in the picture was the home of the bridge master.
This footbridge has now been demolished and replaced with a modern swing-bridge making it much easier for pedestrians.
