| We walked from Parbold to Burscough on Saturday, 23rd June 2007. My 7 year old daughter joined us so we chose a short, 3 mile walk. I'm glad that Judith wanted to walk with us this time, she enjoyed her 3 mile stroll. Parbold to Burscough We caught the train from Wigan to Parbold, a 10 minute journey. There is also a station at Burscough to take us back to Wigan, ideal. Scenic The walk was enjoyable. We left Parbold at around 2pm and headed to Burscough. Having never walked this stretch before we never knew what was around the next corner. Fishing Close to Hoscar there was a fishing match taking place with anglers pitched every few yards or so. The kids loved it. The fishermen all said hello, there were a few rum folk. It's great when someone took the time to show off some fish that he caught - Judith was captivated. She said afterwards that it was the highlight of her walk. Thirsty work As usual, as anyone with kids knows, it's thirsty work walking. We called at the Ring O' Bells pub for a drink. It was a pleasant pub by the canal that welcomed children. If you're walking this stretch I recommend calling in for a drink. Rufford Branch Further along, we came across the junction of the Rufford Branch of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. This looks very interesting. I only took a couple of photos. This will probably be the next walk (7¼ miles) and I'm really looking forward to it. Into Burscough The walk was soon over as it was only 3 miles long. We enjoyed it and Burscough is a convenient place to end the walk. Why? Because it has a station and will be a good starting point for a future walk. It took us around 2½ hours to walk 3 miles. It's a long time, but we ambled because of our young 'un. A thoroughly enjoyable walk. |
