This is the world famous Kirkstall Brewery - famous because of 1)the ease of transporting the "hogshead" and bottles of ale - straight onto barges. And 2) one of the brews was a light ale and by transporting it to Hull and then to India we had the invention of the IPA - India Pale Ale. The brewery closed in 1983 and was in danger of becoming a derelict. Fortunately the need to house over a thousand freshers at Leeds Met. University led to it's renovation. Hence the loud music and washing lines strung between windows you may notice when you walk by.
