More soon...
I've decided to make some improvements to this site, it's a shame just to leave it.

On the way will be:

Photo Comments
Ability to leave comments against any of the 1,700+ photos. This could prove invaluable as people with knowledge of their areas could add interesting and useful information to aid future walkers.

New Design
I created the site hastily just to put something online quickly!

Distances
A detailed list of distances will be published between bridges and locks along the route to aid future walkers.

Other Stuff?
A map? More photos of the new section in Liverpool when it opens? User contributed photos? History? It's over to you.

Changes on the way...

Last Monday 3rd November Molly [daughters Springer Spaniel] did the Rufford branch as a walk, We were able to walk the whole distance alongside the canal from the junction with the Leeds Liverpool to the Douglas river lock, with no trouble. The path does exist you just have to look for it.

I view your canal site often. Using it as a guide to explore local area, in conjunction with OS map, therefore adding distances sounds good.

Just general info for anyone . My granddad Peter Ode was the lock keeper and lived for many years in the Top lock house and my dad was born there, I remember visiting the house many times in the late fifties through to the late seventies.

Roger, thank for the info. We did the Rufford Branch in summer when the plant life was at its best which is probably why we lost the footpath!

Alan, the distances I have are from a publication from the 1800s in great detail. Every lock and bridge is mentioned with feet and furlongs - the same distances apply today.

Dave, again thanks for the info - a future amendment to the site will allow comments against each and every photo to be made. This will prove invaluable for future walkers/visitors.

I'm really sorry you were unimpressed with the stretch of canal between Nelson and Burnley,it's one of my favourites. The whole walk is jam packed with fascinating history. Once you allow users to leave comments with the photo's I shall regale you with tales of wonder, humour mystery and murder.

Hi sofasponge - Don't read too much into it... we really enjoyed every walk we did. By the tone of your post it sounds like you're passionate about your town's history which is great.

I have opened up the photos for comments - fire away. ;)

Hi Brian
My husband and I are just about to commence walking the Leeds Liverpool Canal. Have enjoyed looking at your site and wondered if you had worked out the distances between locks and bridges etc yet as I feel this would be very helpful when planning.

Carole, email me. brian@wiganworld.co.uk
It isn't 'web ready' but I have some distances.

Hi Brian (and all)

Just wanted to say thanks for the site. I am one of a group of 8 people running the Leeds-Liverpool canal towpath as a 24 hour charity event (or rather, Liverpool-Leeds in our case, since most of us are Leeds based and we want to finish the event near home!). On July 10th at 12.00 noon we will set off from Liverpool, running it in pairs as a relay. So there will be 2 runners at a time, each doing a 'leg' of about 5-6 miles, whilst the others are taken along the route by a support minibus. It's a 24 hour 'challenge', so will include running through the night (!!), and we hope to arrive in Leeds at 12.00 noon on the 11th. It's all in aid of charity - MacMillan Cancer Support - so if anyone feels inspired to donate, it would be much appreciated. This can be done online at www.justiving.com/leeds-liverpoolrun

Thanks for the site - it has been very helpful in our preperations and plans etc for the event. And wish us luck!!!

Robin. Read your post of 17 June 2009. How did it go? Did you manage it? Any tales? Is there a web page that journals your team's efforts. I'm impressed with what you were attempting and would like to know more. Here's hoping the silence is due to euphoria not calamity.
