Our last walk from Maghull to Liverpool has been published.
We've done it! Every inch of the 127 mile towpath plus the branch lines (Leigh, Rufford and Springs at Skipton) so our journey was around 142 miles.
This website has been fun and will stay online for future posterity. Whether it gets updated again or not... I don't know. I could open the whole site up to allow comments? I will probably visit Liverpool again soon when the new extension opens. I could also publish detailed distances along the canal to aid future walkers.
It's been fun, thanks to the regular readers and those who have commented in the blog and by email. I've learned a lot.
Congratulations Brian and Thomas Ive enjoyed looking at all the photos that you took on the way.
Did you notice on the old Paradox night club tower clock that it says Vernons Pools.
Fancy seeing two rafts on you last leg of the walk and for you info Brian the photo named Dumping Ground isnt opening up.

Thanks Mick, fixed the photo. Noticed the Vernon Pools clock. I think they demolished the building and left this in situ.

Congratulations on completing your walk from Leeds to L'pool.I hope someone runs trip boats along the new bit of canal from Salisbury dock to Albert dock when it is completed.

Well done.I hope to do the same walk next year alone. Is it safe to do so especially the liverpool section or other urban areas

Hi John, yes it is safe. We never felt threatened or intimidated anywhere.
The scariest moments were geese with their young on the towpath!
Go for it, you'll have no regrets.

Re Parbold to Burscough, you asked what thw concrete structures were that you had seen three of?
They are WW2 "Pill Boxes" or gun emplacements usually for machine guns.......I am amazed that someone doesn't know what they are! :-)
Best, Charlie.

Hi
My cousin and I are planning to walk the canal from Leeds to Liverpool (I live in Liverpool)next spring over a number of days. The hardest bit is searching for accommodation on the way - any ideas??

Hi Rachel, I would plan your walk first in stages, eg Liverpool to Burscough, Burscough to Wigan etc etc. Once you know each stage of the walk, google each area for accommodation.
A good book to buy, which is a must if you're doing the walk is Collins Nicholson Waterways Guide 5. It shows which side the towpath is on, lists all the pubs along the way and contains lots of other useful info of areas you will be passing through.
Good luck with the walk.

Thanks Brian for your helpful hints - I have planned the stages based (loosely) on your separate walks and I have found some places but I will get the book and let you know how we get on – cheers!!

Hello Brian,
Many congratulations on your walk, and for your excellent website.
My Brother and I are hoping to do the Liverpool to Maghull stretch in the next week or so, but I'm sure that I read somewhere that access through some of the paths was restricted.
What was your experience, and do you have any advice?
Kind regards,
Bill

Thanks Bill. The only problem we had was a small section was closed when they were extending the canal to the docks. I believe the work is now complete so you shouldn't have any problems.
